Design Thinking – Using Creative Thinking to Find Solutions

A graphic design is an artistic concept or program or procedure for the creation of an actual object or system, or the logical output of an application, product or procedure, or the product of that program or procedure. The word ‘design’ includes all branches of arts and sciences, but particularly it refers to the creative art of generating ideas for products or services or constructing an object from the available data. The word ‘graphic’ design also includes the use of graphic representations for things such as books, films, charts, diagrams, computer displays and the like.

The field of graphic design thinking is divided into at least four important sub-principals, which are represented graphically and in different colours, lines, shades and so on. The four principles of design thinking are typography, typographical layout, iconography, and visual communication. The idea is that different types of these basic principles are related in complex ways, producing many different effects. Each of the four principal sub-principals is designed for some specific purpose or application. Graphic designers must be skilled in representing and designing certain forms by means of different types of drawings and images. The designer must be able to empathise with the customer and understand his needs.

The designer must be able to think in terms of problems, needs and opportunities. The problem-based thinking method is concerned more with finding solutions for problems. The designer will generally use mathematical, logical and engineering techniques for problem solving, rather than creative thinking methods. The problem-based thinking methodology is based upon the discipline of problem solving. Designers are better placed to find solutions to the problem than other people because they are more directly involved in problems and face them directly. However, problem-based thinking requires designers to use imagination, creativity and their own imagination in relation to solving problems.
